Booktown – Clunes

What a find!

I am so glad we decided to venture off the highway in to Clunes.  My curiosity about Booktown lead to the discovery of one of the world’s members of the International Association of Booktowns – promoting all things books, writings, authors and readers.

In Clunes, the only member in Australia, the first weekend in May sees 15,000 literature lovers descend on the town for a weekend of wordy fun, rare finds and special workshops and readings.

Shops bear the hallmark of the book frieze, and appear to have attracted the weekenders seeking antique and culinary gems away from the larger  cities. Looking past the dusty window ledges, the shop windows gave up treats galore……..well beyond the limits of books.

The facades and witty window dressings add a touch of whimsy……and anticipation of weekends of fun.

The history of the town is also on display…and the free lending library building with its unusual double gables, dates back to 1874.

So bring on May 2020 when I hope to be one of the Booktown bodies…and perhaps even getting a place at Madam Saddler’s to stay.
